Key Words: instinctive, impulsive, self-asserting, active, competitive, spontaneous, direct, adventurous, risk taker, forceful, goal oriented, pioneering, leadership, impatient. The father is both obstacle and means for growth.
In the northern hemisphere, Aries marks the Spring Equinox, the first day of spring when green life pushes through without thought, ready to grow. Many consider this to be the first of a new year. New life begins, a new cycle, a new form. Everything is instinctual and unknown, but without a care, this fire, yang, output of energy moves life forward, explores the unknown, blazes new trails. The cardinal aspect of this sign is giving it the energy to do the job.
Because this is a separating energy, separating from the womb, there is a self-centered aspect, which can be overdone, but is a necessary quality to have in their quest. An associated myth is that of Jason and the Argonauts. To inherit the throne, Jason was sent on a mission to find the Golden Fleece, a mission that the Uncle knew was sure to fail. But Jason gets the support he needs from the gods, inspires and encourages his mates, overcomes horrendous obstacles, and achieves his goal. No weaknesses allowed, always expecting everyone to do their best, this sign can be very impatient, ending up doing the job that no one else can do right. There is also the idea inherent in the Jason story of the conflicts with authority figures, often the father. An Aries child may feel on some level unworthy, feeling pressure from the outside or from their father to accomplish the impossible. They need to prove that they can do it.
So while this energy can be edgy. irritable and ill tempered, it is also fun, full of life and inspiration, and passion. And without that anger, the champion of the underdog wouldn’t exist.
